Your assumption is correct. I never had a problem with orientation when using the device. It sounds like your tablet wants to hold its orientation though. You might try turning auto-rotate off before plugging it in - and ensure you plug it in with the orientation you want. Most Droid tablets have an auto-rotate switch located on the swipe-down interface. Swipe down from the top of your device on the right side and see what comes up. You should see an Auto Rotate button. Press that to turn auto-rotate off. It should change to "Rotation Locked." Now plug it in to your HDMI port and see it that helps. If that doesn't work, then try turning it on. It may not help you, but it's something to try. You might be able to figure out a way to get the screen to appear correctly without orientation problems.

You mentioned your son playing cut the ropes on this. I am assuming that the the app rotated to right side up on the tv screen. The reason I ask is I was thinking about buying one of these mostly for my husbands use. To do a little test run I plugged in my android 4.1.1 tablet by HDMI cord to one of our tvs but the image on the screen stayed in the same vertical orientation so games like cut the rope, draw something and wordfued were sideways on the tv. I just wanted to assure that these kind of games turn right side up before I invest in a system, even though that would not be the main use for the device I think he or our sons might use it to play games too.

[…] Going Open Office – Recently, my company has decided to go “open office.” We’re getting rid of the cubicles. Those of us who have offices (myself included) will be losing them. We’re going to tear down the walls, and we’ll all be working in one big office with rolling desks so that we can “embed” with other teams as needed. This is intended to increase collaboration and make the environment more suited to pair-programming, code reviews, and easy collaboration. On the other hand, there’s still the question of, “who wants to work in a big open office?” I think the answer is that probably very few of us find this completely satisfactory.
Yeah, it just seems weird to see someone shout something, well... less intense. Particularly when they're having their leg chewed off by a zombie, or they're being chased off a cliff by a stampede of carnivorous zebras, or they're trying to avoid being eaten by a dinosaur, or they're being probed by an alien.
